Thep with the Monk at the Temple

Temple Dogs

About 9 years ago we were called in to help with the Temple dogs by the Abbot. We were met with the sight of dying puppies, dogs with appalling wounds and skin conditions, dogs riddled with ticks, fleas and worms.

Several of the dogs had been attacked by dog haters, some had been badly injured by cars and motorbikes that had purposely sped through the Temple grounds. It was too much for the Abbot to deal with all by himself.

The original plan was to help for a year, but we couldn’t withdraw our help knowing the dogs would deteriorate. All the costs are met by Headrock Dogs and it does take a massive chunk out of our budget: vaccinations, neutering, vet bills, operations, de-tick medication, wound medication and food for all 80 dogs.

Your donations will help us to continue to look after all these dogs.

Nine years on all 80 dogs and new puppies are fully vaccinated and treated monthly against ticks and fleas. The female dogs are all neutered and 50% of the male dogs.

Even though we visit the Temple dogs weekly, some of the dogs still fall ill.

The major illness is blood parasites. We have a long history with the Temple dogs and we can quickly detect when one is affected. They stop eating, have high temperatures, white gums and eyes, and a few cases they have almost gone blind. There are also still a few cases of dog attacks and recently one long term resident was killed by two dogs.

If a Temple dog needs daily attention we will bring them into our centre for treatment. They often need over a month to recover successfully and once they are strong we take them back to their friends.

Recently we have brought several older Temple dogs into our centre as they could no longer cope with the harsh Temple environment. A couple have sadly died from cancer, kidney failure and long term injuries and we were there to help them through their final months.
